In the archive, one will find correspondence between Baron de Hirsch and important international political officials in England, Germany, Austria, America and Russia, and Argentina.

The archive is rich in financial and legal documents detailing the more technical side of running a transnational resettlement operation. Of interest to those researching the legal side, the documents between Baron De Hirsch, his advisors, and his lawyers – Lusada and Dietz, will be of primary importance. These documents date from the late 1880s to the early 1900s.

For those interested in the financial matters pertaining to the establishment of these new colonies, the archive contains ledgers accounting for donations to the Baron de Hirsch foundation. Additionally, there is evidence documenting the redistribution of foundation funds to local organizations serving Jews and European communities during those same years. However, most of the material documents the financial undertakings which allowed the foundation to resettle tens of thousands of Jews from Eastern Europe in Argentina.

For those interested in the social and physical reality of those sent to Argentina in the first colonial period, one may be interested to look through the correspondence between Baron de Hirsch, Dr. V. Lowenthal, and A. Loeb, who routinely sent reports of the mission back to Europe. These reports include details about the quality of life there, the daily routines, the schedules of the new settlers, and more.

In the Spring of 2022, I continued working on RG 318 – the archive of documents relating to Baron Maurice de Hirsch, his personal life, the establishment of the JCA, and the first period of Jewish agricultural settlement in Argentina.
