Maybe it was because I had been speaking Yiddish all day, or maybe I was just tired from the heat, but in more than one instance, I found myself speaking Yiddish to people on the street, usually to their bewilderment. Often I found myself saying גוט מאָרגן or אַ דאַנק when passing people on the street or buying groceries. One time I remember specifically, I was at the market downtown with my classmates Jesse and Flora, where we had been speaking Yiddish to avoid being pegged as American tourists. At some point, I was separated from the other two and I went up to a vendor to ask them what they sold. I said “?װאָס איז דאָס”, and was met with confusion, as is expected, at which point I realized my mistake, and apologized “זײַט מיר מוהל”! To top it off, afterward as I walked away I murmured “אַ דאַנק”. All this is to say, the program certainly put Yiddish at the forefront of my mind.

When I was in Tel Aviv this summer, after many hours spent studying and learning Yiddish while speaking almost if not entirely Yiddish, I often decided to spend some time wandering around the city or exploring.
