The answer I would give was always something along the lines of “There was heavy Jewish immigration there, similar to New York”, and while that is true, to me it didn’t explain the whole picture. During the Naomi Prawer Kadar International Yiddish Summer Program, director Justin Cammy held weekly lectures, and in one of these, he addressed a similar idea, that being the idea of Yiddish as a transnational language. He spoke of the fact that because Yiddish doesn’t have, and never had its own country, Yiddishland doesn’t exist, yet includes anywhere Yiddish is spoken. This was an interesting idea, and a better answer to the questions I was asked than I ever gave, but probably wouldn’t have stuck out to me if I hadn’t realized at that time whom I was sitting with. In my section of roughly 20 people alone, there were 10 different nationalities represented, spanning from Argentina to Sweden to Russia. This program gave me the opportunity to not only learn about the transnationality of Yiddish but also to experience it through meeting many amazing people from around the globe. Thank you to the Naomi Prawer Kadar Foundation for making this opportunity possible. !אַ שײנעם דאַנק

Before our exploring Yiddishland trip in Argentina, I had many people ask me why I would be traveling to South America to explore and learn Yiddish, a language heavily associated with Eastern Europe in the mind of the public.
