While many people associate Yiddish with Jews from Europe or North America, there is a long tradition of Jewish people and Yiddish-speakers in South America as well. In particular, Jewish people have settled in Argentina for hundreds of years. While these populations were predominantly Sephardi and Mizrahi, many Ashkenazi Jews immigrated to Argentina in the 19th century, bringing their culture and language with them.

Yiddish newspapers became commonplace, with around forty different newspapers cropping up between 1898 and 1914. Yiddish theater also flourished, becoming popular throughout the early 20th century. Many famous Yiddish actors, including Jacob Ben-Ami and Molly Picon, came to the country to perform.
