Where Yiddish Can Take You

This past June, I went to Argentina with six of my fellow Columbia Yiddishists, on a trip to explore Yiddishland across the world. On this trip, we saw and experienced a great many things, and learned much more about Yiddish in Argentina than I ever imagined existed beforehand. We ate amazing food, talked to interesting people, and saw historic Yiddish sites that I never would have found on my own. One event that stood out to me, however, came when we visited the American Embassy in Buenos Aires and met the ambassador, Marc Stanley. The embassy itself was beautiful, with no notable Yiddish or Jewish history mind you, but what struck me was where I was at the time, and what had got me there. I was sitting in what looked to me to be a palace, with an important and dignified politician, because of Yiddish, and because of the Naomi Prawer Kadar Foundation. At that moment I was quite thankful for my decision to study Yiddish, and of course to be able to be a part of this fellowship.
