This article is from the Yiddish Tageblatt, printed on September 25, 1925.[1] It’s a call for people to come and attend the cornerstone laying event for the new building for Talmud Torah Tiferet Jerusalem located at 145-147 East Broadway in the Lower East side. Until this day, the Yeshiva still operates at this location, and in 1938, Rabbi Moshe Feinstein who was considered to be one of the greatest rabbis of his generation, became the head of the Yeshiva. Due to his world renown status, many people think the Yeshiva was founded in 1938, but as we can see from this article, the Yeshiva was in fact founded at least ten years earlier. Tiferet Jerusalem houses an elementary school, high school, and post-high school program. In contrast to Yeshiva University, which was founded in 1886 [2] and offered accredited college courses in the same campus, Tiferet Jerusalem had a partnership with The City College of New York where the post-high school students could take college courses three evenings a week while they did their religious studies during the day.[3]
The article quotes a verse from the Talmud Nedarim 81a which says “Be careful with the sons of paupers, from them the Torah will flow” and they suggest that this verse implies that one has a duty to support Tiferet Jerusalem which is located in the a impoverished Jewish neighborhood and would offer a Jewish education to the poor people of the area. I found this to be interesting as it gives insight into the status of the Jews in the Lower East side during the early 1900s. According to Jacob Riis, a social reformer who wrote the book “How the Other Half Lives” in the 1880s, the poverty in the Lower East side was clear to an observer. He writes “In Essex Street two small rooms in a six-story tenement were made to hold a ‘family’ of father and mother, twelve children, and six boarders” [4] Given the state of affairs in the Lower East side during that time, Tiferet Jerusalem was suggesting that they were needed in the community because their institution would enable the impoverished Jews to pursue Torah study.
