The recording which I had the opportunity to explore for LCAAJ was particularly special. In it, renowned Yiddishist Mordkhe Schaechter interviews his own mother, Lifshe Schaechter-Widman. Although the audio is difficult to hear, their conversation is full of soul. Through his questions about how his mother pronounces certain words, and which phrases were common where she grew up, Mordkhe uncovers the world of his mother’s childhood in the town of Zvenyachyn.
This interview was especially interesting to me after having worked through Mordkhe Shechter’s beloved textbook Yiddish Tzvei over the past two semesters. While Yiddish Tzvei can often be quite dry, hearing Mordkhe’s conversation with his mother helped breathe life into what can often seem very minute academic differences between various dialects of Yiddish. For starters, it was of note which languages other than Yiddish Mordkhe would use to prompt his mother to give him the appropriate Yiddish word. Either he would use circumlocution, describing the concept he wished his mother to name with other Yiddish words, or he would simply feed her a word in English. Mordkhe’s expertise of English, and his desire to carefully demarcate anglicizations of Yiddish words is clear from Yiddish Tzvei, but it surprised me to hear how often he used English to communicate with his mother.
One interesting element of the dynamic between Mordkhe and his mother is how he often suggests corrections to her answers and she summarily rejects them. In one section, Mordkhe leads his mother through a series of English sentences about giving apples in order to record her use of various pronouns. He asks her to translate: “we give the apple to you.” When she responds with “אונז געבן עס דיר,” he asks for the plural you. Lifshe responds with the appropriate, “אײַך אדער דיר” before Mordechai decides he is still unsatisfied: ״דו האָסט געזאָגט עס בעסער פריער״. He continues to ask questions until Lifshe has expressed how she would conjugate each pronoun in each case. As always, it is fascinating to see how Mordkhe, a linguist, does not passively record the answers but finds the problems and inconsistencies in the usages as they arise. We often think of languages as being recorded apriori in dictionaries and textbooks. Listening to the recordings from LCAAJ gave me a glimpse into the process of developing records of languages based on the living experience of people.
Lifshe also corrects Mordkhe. In a section in which they are discussing words related to bodily functions, sighs, groans, belches, etc. Mordkhe suggests a word for “sneezes” which Lifshe dismisses. “ער ראַק? ניין! ער ניסט,” she says. These corrections punctuate the almost rhythmic sequence of “git” and “mhm” we hear from Mordkhe after each answer. Interestingly, not all of the words that Lifshe gives are present in common Yiddish dictionaries either. When Mordkhe asks her how to say belch she first gives the more common “גרעפץ” before quietly adding “שליפעצט.” Neither of the dictionaries we most commonly use for class, ידייש ווערטערבוך or the Online Comprehensive Yiddish-English Dictionary, record this word for belch. Despite the existence of these recordings, there are so many words which are not commonly known and used by Yiddishists today.
Lifshe gives clear, direct answers, infrequently interspersed with stories from life in the alterheim. The two also laugh quite a bit throughout the interview; it is clear that it is a pleasure for Lifshe to delve into the memories which these words conjure and for Mordkhe to bear witness to his mother’s memories of her language. LCAAJ gave me a chance to experience Yiddish not as a fossilized relic which has been preserved by linguists but as a language which gave color to a full lifetime of experiences. Hearing Lifshe Schechter-Wiman’s Yiddish gave me a better appreciation for the lived experiences of Yiddish speakers and how mame-loshen carries the rich meanings of life in Eastern Europe.
