This poster advertises a “Yom Kippur Ball” at Clarendon Hall, hosted by members of the Jewish Anarchist Party. Jewish anarchists in America protested government, the state, and worked towards labor reforms, based on the writings of European writers and Jewish-American authors such as Emma Goldman. A culturally Jewish organization with roots on the Lower East Side, they wrote largely in Yiddish, as seen in this poster, but also in their Yiddish publications, most notably the “Fraye Arbeter Shtime” (The Free Voice of Labor) newspaper. Despite this, the anarchist ideology was actively anti-religious, which explains this particular event occurring on Yom Kippur. In addition to Yom Kippur events, the anarchists frequently hosted lectures, concerts, and other events on Friday nights.
